Amy Mercredi, Adult Educator, Hay River CLC, Aurora College
Each month when there were professional development days for the children in the elementary schools in Hay River, Aurora College held a family literacy day where adult learners and staff could bring in their children and do literacy activities with them. This involved having parents and children enjoy books together, do crafts, work on computer games and spend quality family time together.
The program served two purposes, it provided a family literacy program that was meeting the needs of both the parents and the children and it acknowledged the multiple roles of adult learners. Being a learner can be a challenge when you have other responsibilities.
