The golden rule of brainpower:

Use it or Lose it.

The brain functions like a muscle in that the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Watching lots of TV, having a mundane job routine, cooking, cleaning, and shopping the same way over and over again all contribute to a brainpower loss. Learning new things, varying your routines, having provocative discussions, going on adventurous vacations, and playing a musical instrument all cause your brain to make new connections and function better.

Being an adult teaching other adults literacy brings to mind the Christmas cactus I saw in bloom at my mother’s house last December: an already beautiful,strong,well-rooted plant when given the right light, temperature, and space will decide on its own that the time has come to blossom. ~ Mary McCormack

One to one tutoring in an adult learning program helps students who are trying to further their education, while providing a satisfying experience for the volunteer. I strongly advise anyone, with an interest in assisting people to move ahead with their learning,to consider participating in a literacy volunteer program. ~David Johnson
