Termination

This means that you have not made the decision to leave your job. You have been terminated or dismissed from the organization. This can be done for a number of reasons usually related to company rules being broken, or due to downsizing. A lay-off is different than a termination. When you are laid-off, there is a chance that you will be recalled to work when business improves.

Resignation

This means that you have chosen to leave the organization. If you decide to quit a job, you usually need to do it in writing. Some companies will ask you to leave immediately and will pay your salary in lieu of notice. Some companies ask for notice. This means that you will stay at your job for an agreed period of time. The organization will look for a replacement and you may be asked to help train the new person. Every company or organization has a different approach to handling resignations.
