Activities
Each reading is accompanied by a range of activities. “Using Vocabulary” and “Comprehension Questions” are basic literacy exercises that focus on reading and writing skills. Learners should answer in full sentences, when appropriate. “Something to Think About” sections pose questions at the higher levels of cognition such as application, comparison, prediction and evaluation. There are opportunities in these for class discussion, individual writing or group responses. Many lessons also include special “mini lessons” on communications, math, human relations, and other skills.

Notes

Welcome to Cape Breton Island!
This section discusses the physical formation of Cape Breton Island. An additional activity that would be appropriate here is a discussion of how coal is formed and where the island’s coal seams are.

On the Move
Instructors may want to read the newspaper article included in this lesson with their classes.

Welcome to Inverness County!
Use of a dictionary would be particularly appropriate in this lesson to discuss the meaning of the word “awesome.” The slang use of this word is not intended here.

Explore Victoria County!
There are so many good web sites (too numerous to list) about John Cabot that this lesson provides a good opportunity for students to do independent research. Instructors could present questions such as, “When was John Cabot born?” “ How long did it take him to cross the Atlantic Ocean?” or “ How many times did he cross the Atlantic Ocean?” and students could find the answers themselves.
