What happened in the summer of 1968? A forest fire in Chalkyitsik that headed towards Fort Yukon.
Why was Itchoo so upset? This was her hunting and trapping land and she wanted her son to stop the fire.
Why did Velma pray frantically? She wanted her dad to rush up to the land and save the tree so that Itchoo wouldn't die.
Describe Itchoo's house when Velma's mother went to give her breakfast. It was a mess. Her bible open on the floor and papers and other personal items strewn about. Itchoo was laying their breathing but unresponsive.
A part of Velma knew that Ichoo would die but it was hard to believe. Why? She had a powerful presence, it was Velma's first encounter with death.
