SUMMARY REPORT ON
FIELDTEST OF FOOD TIPS (ENGLISH)
CONSUMERS' ASSOCIATION OF CANADA

Purpose

The goal of the fieldtest was to get feedback from limited skilled renders regarding the readability and acceptability of the eight draft Food Tips.

Methadology

One hundred English language literacy classes from across Cant were asked to review one of the eight factsheets with approximately ten of their students. Over 80 literacy classes agreed to take part. Both the students and the teachers were asked to give their comments regarding the content, style and layout of the draft Food Tip. Instruments were provided for conducting the fieldtest, and teachers summarized the students' comments and returned these summaries to The Movement for Canadian Literacy (MCL). This feedback was then forwarded to me.

Outcomes

Response was excellent, both in terms of the high number of returns and the high number of positive comments about the sheets.

Number of classes who responded: 69*
(Four of these classes didn't send any statistical data, and one did not identify which tip they had reviewed. Where possible, the comments are recorded in the report, however, these five classes are not included in these statistics.)

Number of students: 560*
(The number of students is greater than this, however, we have no numerical data from five of the classes.)

  • On average, 76% of the students found the draft they assessed easy to read Most of the reading difficulties they encountered stemmed from unfamiliarity with certain terms, and the volume of material in some of the tips. In addition, some of the classes in the study were very basic readers.

*

Reports from an additional 10 classes (150 students) that were delayed due to the postal strike, also provided input for the final revision
