Part B: Setting Up the AWAL Workshop

Before You Begin

Here is how AWAL works

EDUCATOR PLACEMENT
Educators are placed in a variety
of business and industry
workplace settings for a half day.

FIRST INTERVIEW
Once on-site, educators conduct a
structured interview with a representative
from human resources or management to
learn more about the company’s products
and services, employment practices and
opportunities, and future skill
requirements. (20 minutes)

SECOND INTERVIEW
Educators then interview a front line
employee to gather information about the use
of math, computers, thinking skills, working
with others, and communication practices. In
addition, employees are asked to reflect on
how education helps prepare learners for
future employment. (40-60 minutes)

WORK SITE TOUR
(Depending on work site)

REFLECTION
To connect the workplace with the curriculum, educators
complete a reflection activity. This includes an analysis of
HRSDC’s Essential Skills. Educators then develop
teaching resources that connect what they teach in their
classroom with its application in the workplace. (half day)
