Suggestions

• After completing the vocabulary in this chapter, cut all the words out and ask learners to group them into rooms of the house.
• You can introduce colours associated with house- hold items. Teach the question, "What colour is your ?" Practice responding with a variety of colours.
• You may want to introduce the concepts of flea markets and yard sales for learners not already familiar with them.

Activities

• Introduce the question, "Where is the ?" Also introduce basic prepositions. Look at the pictures of the rooms in this chapter and describe, using prepositions, where each item is.
• Use the sales flyers to make an information gap activity. See page 13.8 for an example of an information gap activity.
• Write the words in this chapter on separate pieces of paper. Ask learners to take the words home and tape them to the items (e.g. tape the word 'fridge' on the fridge.) Ask them to read the words each time they pass by the item in their home.
• Choose one room at a time and ask learners to collect pictures from magazines, newspapers or flyers of items in that room. Keep these pictures in a large envelope or glue them on bristol board. Collect these over a period of time, reviewing the vocabulary frequently. Eventually, items in all rooms will be represented. Learners can ask each other, "Do you have a ?", responding with the appropriate responses. This can lead to a discussion about present furniture and appliances and descriptions of homes and household items in learners' previous homes.
