U-shaped valleys usually have been formed by glaciers. When the glaciers covered the land, they pushed their way through the mountains, and through some of the V-shaped valleys. The action of the ice scraping along the valley walls and scraping out the valley bottom carved out a U-shape. The huge glaciers moved through the valleys, picking up large rocks and a lot of debris, such as soil and smaller rocks. U-shaped valleys usually have very steep sides, sometimes curving in toward the bottom of the slope, and flat land lies in between the sides. This flat land usually has fertile soil, a warmer climate than the surrounding areas, and a good water supply.

Nova Scotia is proud of many places. Annapolis Valley is certainly one of these places. Its valuable, fertile farmland, and its beautiful scenery makes the Annapolis Valley one of Nova Scotia's finest areas to visit.
