Madeline: We always had plenty to cook. We had our own garden. We raised cattle, sheep and hens. That's all we did was housework and cooking. There was no washing machine. We had to use tubs and scrubboards. There was no electricity. After a while we got a gas washer. That was the beginning of the easier times. Overall, we had a good life and there's not too much I'd change about it.

THE ISLAND SONG

I'll sing you a song
It's not about love or a song of the sea
But of those who are leaving this island so dear
Come listen to me and the story you'll hear

Just a few years ago we were all happy here
With nothing to worry us all through the year
Then someone decided he wouldn't remain
Now everyone's thinking of doing the same

A lot of the people have left here this year
There's not much in sight for the rest living here
Chances are great that the plant will close down
I think we should leave boys and build a new town

We will go to the Beach and climb over the hill
Start building our houses and work with a will
Soon we'll be living there just like the rest
We'll do what we can and we'll hope for the best

The Island's a fine place where fishing's concerned
Just catch it and split it and the money is earned
But crossing those narrows in rain, wind or snow
It not very wonderful, that you all know.

When you live by the main road you can go when you please
For business or pleasure you can travel with ease
And when the car stops, you can walk to your door
No motor boat waiting to bother you more

And now for to finish this self-composed song
It's not very good and it's not very long
I don't mean to insult you or make you feel sore
But I think you should leave and go on the Beach Shore.
