Central Newfoundland
Before the Europeans, these forests were the home to Newfoundland's aboriginal people, the Beothuks, once known as the Original Red Indians of North America. Gander was once known as the "Crossroads of the World" for this was the place of the International Airport. The airport and air force base became the center for commercial and military air traffic in the 1930's. East of Gander is Gambo, the home of J.R. Smallwood, Premier of the province for over two decades. Joey or Smallwood, as he was known, led Newfoundland and Labrador into confederation with Canada in 1949. |
