Pun
Pun is the use of similar sounding words with quite different meanings
to create humour.
A flea and a fly in the flue
Were caught, so what could they do?
Said the fly, “Let us flee.” “Let us fly, “said
the flea.
So they flew through a flaw in the flue. |
Irony
Irony can be observed when a writer’s intended message is clearly
the opposite of what is written.
“Jane worked hard, was on time, and had a good personality; so
they fired her”
Flashback
Flashbacks are descriptions of previous events during the present time
in a narrative. Writers will describe previous events to provide background
or to help explain more recent events.
Today, not like Tuesday when I was broke, they offered to buy my lunch.
Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is the use of words , phrases, or actions as signals that
readers can use to infer future events in a narrative.
“In a week, her whole world would change.”
