Pijunnaqsiniq Culture CampPijunnaqsiniq, a culture camp for Inuit youth based on the needs identified by youth and Elders, was piloted in September 1998 in Rankin Inlet. During the camp, the Elders teach traditional Inuit knowledge and skills to the youth such as traditional land and sea mammal tanning and sewing, use of seal skins for rope or avatait and avataq, traditional drum making, and hunting. Personal life skills are held in the evenings to address individual personal problems or difficulties. A second camp was held at Ujarasugjulik-Rocky Brook on Southampton Island where more emphasis was placed on land and sea mammal hunting and fishing. Participants recommended that a camp of this kind happen every year.
