L. LEARNER ASSESSMENT

A quality adult literacy program uses a variety of flexible, learner-centred assessment procedures when learners enter the program, while they are being tutored and when they leave the program.


a) The following conditions support the above statement. Please check those which apply to your program.

A program staff person:

___ conducts an initial interview and orientation session with potential learner;
___ identifies any special learning needs among potential learners;
___ makes any necessary referrals to other programs and/or agencies;
___ considers initial assessment results when selecting a tutor for the learner.

Learners are involved in:

___ assessing their own needs;
___ setting their own learning goals and objectives;
___ designing assessment procedures.

While learners are in the program:

___ progress and achievement checks related to learners' goals and objectives are built into the tutoring sessions;
___ new goals and objectives may be defined as former ones are attained;
___ if progress is not being made, referrals may be made to learning specialists.

When learners leave the program:

___ assessment is based on the attainment of learner-stated goals;
___ assessment is also based on learners' progress and changes in other areas such as self-esteem, body language, new uses of literacy, social achievements;
___ assessment may also be based on testing procedures required by the program in specific content or skill areas.
