The Crew of a Fishing Schooner
Many young women worked in the fishery. Some went away to work "on
the Labrador." Some worked as part of the crew on a fishing boat,
as this young woman did. Women who worked alone among men had no one
to help them if they became pregnant. In 1897, five young women who
had worked in the summer fishery in Labrador were charged with infanticide.
