"Steads"
The people who lived at Markland called their plots of land "steads."
This is short for homestead, another word for farm. When people came
to Markland, they believed that they would own their steads. After many
years, they still did not know how to settle their debt with the government
so that they could own the houses they lived in and the land that they
farmed.
