In the March 1996 issue of "Literacy Connections" you read the Editor's Note that it was her last issue. Freda Hudson did a great job for us and our special thanks to her for a job well done.
We are fortunate to have our new Ontario Director, Beverly Clarke, take over as Editor. She will work closely with Karen Ingalls of the Development Office to produce "Literacy Connections". The last four issues cost us about $26,300. Printing costs were $12,500. and mailing $13,800. Canada Post Corporation has transferred its financial support to LLC's family literacy project. We will need new sources of revenue in order to keep this communication vehicle on the road.
Our Annual Meeting was held in Vancouver, BC at the end of the Western Development Conference, May 2-5. The highlights were as follows: the launch of our history book, "The First Twenty-Five Years"; the presentation of a $10,000. cheque by Canada Post Corporation to our family literacy project, "Creating a Learning Culture in the Home"; a talk by Andrew Nikiforuk, LLC patron, and the student graduation at the banquet. Thanks to Arlene Epp, Cher McLean and their committee for a well organized Western Development Conference.
I attended the Atlantic Regional Conference in Charlottetown, PEI, May 16-18. There were some excellent seminars and workshops designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of students, tutors and trainers. Highlights were: a luncheon speech by the Honorable Jeannie Lea, PEI's Minister of Higher Education, Training and Adult Learning; the student graduation dinner with the guest speaker, Marion Reid, a LLC patron and former Lieutenant Governor of PEI; and the Saturday lunch speaker, Clane Moss, our LLC national student representative on our LLC Board.
It would be irresponsible not to bring to the attention of our Laubach membership some of the funding issues we are currently facing. The Treasurer reported that we had a deficit of $112,000. for the year. Distributorship sales were down about $93,000. which reflects cuts in grants to institutions and charitable organizations by governments at all levels. Our fund raising donations were down slightly. This is further evidence of financial difficulties ahead.
No doubt you have noticed in the above remarks that LLC may face some serious economic problems in the long term. It is important for all members to think about this and make suggestions concerning fund raising.
Funding is a mutual problem for the national organization, provincial organizations and councils which requires a cooperative effort to solve. We need innovative ideas to expand our basic "EACH ONE TEACH ONE" concept to every community in Canada. At our next November Board meeting we will be concentrating on our priorities, efficiency of delivery, review of bylaws and fund raising. We need ideas and input from our members. Please write to me prior to September 15 at PO Box 339, Lunenburg, NS B0J 2CO. We need your support.
