THE STUDENT'S COLUMN - by Arnie Stewart

column

Lots of new information for learners...September 1998 started with a big bang in Toronto with the Canada Post Flight for Freedom award dinner. September ended with Word on the Street, where everyone congregates on a main street which is closed to all cars. Many books are bought, sold and given away. We all met new people and learned a lot about new cultures, as well as reading.

October continued on with meetings and student get-togethers. November brought us to North Bay for an Annual General Meeting and also to Brantford for a LLO Biennial Conference and AGM. Just before Christmas we had a get-together with students. We meet once a month to talk over items to help our skills become better. We are learning on a computer and write to each other to keep up with our spelling. Now we hear from columneveryone all over Ontario and Canada, so far. You can contact us through Alpha Plus and please check out the Training Post at www.trainingpost.org Let us know who you are! Say, "hello".

Dr. Bob Laubauch Student Fund

Do you have a great idea for a "student project" but are a little short on funding? If so, LLC wants to hear from you! In celebration of Dr. Bob Laubach's 80th birthday, a Student Fund of $2500 has been established by Laubach Literacy of Canada. The Dr. Bob Laubach Student Fund has been specifically designated to support student activities and initiatives with submission proposals to be received by the LLC Development Office by April 20, 1999. Successful applications will be announced at the LLC conference in May.

Criteria for the Dr. Bob Laubach Student Fund:

  • Student support for all proposals must be indicated by the inclusion of two student names and their telephone numbers. Should the committee administering the fund have any questions regarding the proposal, one of the students will be contacted for clarification.
  • Students may solicit any and all support required in submitting the written proposal.
  • The project must be specifically aimed at the student population and take place within the 1999 calendar year.
  • Winners must submit a brief report to Literacy Connections at the conclusion of the project.

Requests for funding must be accompanied by thefollowing information:

  • A description of the project including approximate time frames, projected costs, number of students tc be involved and anticipated benefits to students.
  • The name and contact number of a sponsoring council or provincial organization.
