THE STUDENT'S COLUMN - by Arnie Stewart

What a busy time it has been since March! As you can see by the photograph (that's me leaning on the shovel!) we had a great turnout of students from all over Canada at the LLC conference in Gander, Newfoundland in May. As part of Laubach's new TREE (Teamwork to Raise Education and Equality) program for students, we all took part in a tree planting ceremony. I am so happy to report that Laubach Literacy of Canada (LLC) has now hired a student as our very own TREE Coordinator. Her name is Pennyann Tibbitts and you can read more about her on page 5.

As LLC Student Representative, I also had the honour of traveling to Orlando, Florida in June to attend the Laubach Literacy Action annual conference. It made me so proud to be able to tell our American friends how involved the students are becoming within LLC and the support that we are receiving from Pennyann, Claude Lauzon and Robin Jones is so motivating!

When I wasn't traveling for literacy, I was giving speeches about it! In Hamilton, ON I spoke to business, volunteer and government people. This month I will be delivering a speech to 1,400 students (grades 9-12) at a school in New Liskeard.

I couldn't do any of this without the support from the students and volunteers across Canada!

LLC Winners of the Canada Post Literacy Award

Congratulations to Doreen Aubertin (QC) and Yvonne Westall (NB) for their Canada Post Literacy Awards in the category of Individual Achievement. For Community Leadership, the Transcona Literacy Centre in Winnipeg took home the honours!
