Tom: What is your name?
Bessie: Bessie Merrigan
   
Keith: Where are you from?
Bessie:

I was born in a small town called Deep Bight. I have lived in Change Islands, Clarenville, Baie Verte, Lewisporte and Corner Brook. I now live in Pasadena.

   
David: What is your job?
Bessie:

I work at the College of the North Atlantic in Corner Brook. I run the Student Success Centre. College students use the Centre when they need help in any of their courses.

   
Tom: How long have you had this position?
Bessie:

I have worked with the College for almost thirteen years. I have worked in this position for the past six years.

   
Keith:

Are you involved with literacy?

Bessie:

I have been involved, as a volunteer, with literacy at the provincial, and national level. I tutored students in my home years ago and also in recent years. I have volunteered with the Literacy Council in Corner Brook since 1988. I was a member of the National Board of Laubach Literacy of Canada for five years.

I have been President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Laubach Literacy Council for the past two years. As a trained tutor, I have done tutor training all over Newfoundland and Labrador. I have also been a member of the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador for the past year.

   
David:

Congratulations on your new appointment!

Bessie:

Thank you. I am really excited about my new role on the Literacy Development Council.

   
Tom:

What is your new title?

Bessie:

Chairperson of the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador.

   
Keith: What does this new job involve?
Bessie:

This is a voluntary job that involves chairing the Literacy Development Council Board. The Board is made up of a chairperson, 12 other voting members, a member who is a representative of the Department of Education, a member who represents the Social Policy Committee of the Executive Council, and a member who is a representative of the Government of Canada with literacy responsibilities. The three government representatives do not vote, but are members who advise the rest of Council. The Chair of Council calls meetings, chairs meetings, and is a member of all committees of Council.
