Garrett's goal

This story is a little about my life. My name is Garrett. I am 35 years old. My education is around Grade 6 or 7. I am originally from Newfoundland, but I have lived half my life in Ontario.

I moved back to Newfoundland about one year ago because work got pretty slow in Ontario. My wife and I decided to move to Norris Arm, my home town. There's not much work here, but I moved because I had to get the weight off my shoulders. My kids can be kids here. I am going to try to live here until the summer. However, I don't think I can go on welfare, so I may have to move back to Ontario.

Since I moved home I started school, something I thought would never happen to me. Back in school, what a laugh! But here I am at the Literacy Centre trying to do something, not only for me, but for my family. It was hard to take that first step inside because of the name on the building, "The Literacy Centre." That name almost turned me away. I made a good decision.

Since I started school, I can see myself go up the ladder fast. When you can see a difference in yourself, it makes you feel good.

My goal in life is to become a mechanic or body man. That's something I'd enjoy doing. I love working with my hands.

Today, Garrett is taking an automotive course in Gander.
