Starting Points is a book produced by Cabot College. There is a lot of interesting, useful information in this book. There are chapters about the different levels of government in Canada. The book includes maps and information about North America, including Canada. Starting Points contains a lot of facts and figures about Newfoundland and Labrador. You can read about the weather in our part of Canada.
Chapter 7 is about the fisheries. Here is a small part of that chapter: "Mr. Sandy Boland is from Newtown, Bonavista Bay. Forty years ago he went to the ice for seals. (He said), 'Years ago we had seals, cod everything. Now you can't even fish for salmon. It's all gone.'"
"Mr. Boland buys seals from fishermen in Twillingate. He brings the seal meat to St. John's to sell. He sells it from his truck on the waterfront. He has to have a special permit to sell seal on the waterfront."
Starting Points gives Mr. Boland's recipe for roasted seal carcass. "Soak the seal meat in vinegar for one hour. Rinse with hot water. Put in the oven with some salt pork. Cook it like any other roast.
There is also a chapter about signs and symbols. This chapter explains warning signs.
Each chapter has an exercise which reviews the material in that chapter.
The book provides reading material for adults who may be just starting a Level 1 program.
