Mile One in the West, to Mile One in
the East By Doreen Cook
We drove our 1979 Malibu station wagon with all of our
belongings from Victoria, British Columbia to St. John's, Newfoundland and
Labrador. We went on the boat to get to Vancouver, from there we drove on to
Calgary.
We spent Christmas with family and friends in Calgary. Our
friend was selling one of their dogs. I fell in love with the little one and he
loved being with us, so we bought it. We were not sure what the dog was going
to be like traveling in the car, but I was not leaving him behind. The little
dog just got in the back and lay down. Sometimes, the dog would look out the
window.
We left Calgary in February and started moving east. We
stopped in many places including Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Regina, Winnipeg,
and Thunder Bay. We visited the Terry Fox Memorial. We moved on to Toronto,
Cornwall, Montreal, Fredericton, Moncton, Truro and North Sydney.
We waited for the boat in North Sydney to cross over to
the island of Newfoundland. We continued our drive across the island until we
reached Mile 0 in St. John's. We stopped in all of these places along the way.
We did odd jobs to raise money and also rest. We love to travel and to meet
other people who like traveling. Perhaps some day we will meet you!
Some things to think about?
- Where would you like to go on vacation?
- What are some of the advantages of traveling by
car?
- Which part of Canada would you like to visit most?
