SPCA comes to the rescue

Pet Control
(continued from page 1...)

The cat is an example of how quickly animal populations grow. A cat can have three litters of kittens each year. If you count all the kittens in that cat's family line, one cat can produce 400 kittens in five years.

Ms. Mercer would like to hire a humane educator to teach younger children proper treatment of animals. There are links between animal abuse and people abuse. "Respect for one form of life corresponds with respect for other forms of life," said David Buffett, provincial SPCA president and member of the Canadian ‘Federation of Humane Societies Board of Directors.

The cover of the SPCA brochure about the care of animals has the words, "All Things Bright and Beautiful, with wings, with feathers, with fur, with two feet or four, to be respected and cared for and love

How to help the SPCA

Volunteers and workers do the jobs needed to keep the animals well cared for and safe. "Other people can help the shelter in different ways," said Ms. Mercer. "They need donations of food, newspapers, old blankets, dishcloths and towels, and they need people to pick up recyclables and help with repairs at the shelter."

Junior volunteers walk the dogs. Ms. Mercer would like to see more people involved to get the dog walking program going all day. Anyone can register as a dog walker. Exercise calms dogs down and makes them more adoptable.

"The SPCA is the place for animals that are lost, unwanted, or abused. Animals have value and their rights should be protected," said Mr. Buffet.

Some untrue things about pets

  • It is not true that spaying and neutering makes a dog fat and lazy. Only over feeding and lack of exercise will make a dog fat.
  • It is not true that one litter makes a female a better dog.
  • It is not true that milk causes worms in animals.
  • It is not true that meat makes a dog vicious.
  • It is not true that dogs need bones to chew. Dogs should never be given chicken or fish bones or bones that have been cooked. They splinter and may damage the walls of the stomach.
  • It is not true that our pets will survive when left alone. They will die from either starvation, exposure, predators, or get hit by a car.

PLEASE DO NOT GET A PET UNLESS
