Hockey is very popular sport. This exercise is designed to
help you write a short story about the sport. Before we begin our story, lets
put some thoughts together by brainstorming.
Think about the following questions and write your ideas
in the space provided |
What type of audience will be reading my story?
There are many things I can say about hockey. What are the
main things I want to talk about?
Is there some basic information the reading audience
should have to get the most from my story? |
Ideas:

HOCKEY by Mike Powell

I like to play and watch hockey but the sport is going
crazy. Everyone is trying to hurt another player so their team can win the
game. I believe in a nice body check to get the puck but not one that puts the
other guy in the hospital.
I believe that no one person should earn three million
dollars to playa fun sport like hockey. I played for fourteen years as an
enforcer with the Senior Flyers here in Gander. I got hurt a few times and no
one paid me a million dollars a year to playa sport I love. |

Mike talks about two concerns he has about hockey. Do you
agree with him? Talk to other classmates about these concerns. Perhaps you and
your classmates could conduct a survey of twelve hockey fans and see if they
agree. You could also do a similar survey with twelve hockey players.
Suggestions:
Compare the results of both surveys. Are they similar? Do the
thoughts of hockey players differ from hockey fans. Write your findings in a
short report. We would be happy to publish your research in First-Time
Readers. |
