Moose Meat is a Healthy Choice

Moose meat is a healthy food choice. "Moose meat is high in protein and low in fat. It is a good source of iron and other vitamins and minerals. I cannot say anything but good about it," said Corrie Locke, Central Newfoundland Health Centre nutritionist.

Inland Fish and Wildlife Division, with advice from the Department of Health, recommends the public not eat moose liver and kidneys. They have high levels of cadmium. Cadmium is a heavy metal that can be harmful to the body if too much is eaten.

Here is a recipe for you to try.

MOOSE STIR FRY

2 tsp. cooking oil (10 ml)
2 lb. moose meat, cubed (1 kg)
1 onion
1 cup water (200 ml)
2 tsp. cornstarch (10 ml)
1 stalk celery
1 green pepper
2 carrots
2 cups cabbage (500 ml)
1 tin mushrooms and juice
4 tsp. Soya sauce (20 ml)
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce (10ml)

Heat oil in fry pan. Add onion and meat. Brown. Salt to taste. Cook in water until tender. Add chopped vegetables. Add more water when needed. Cook until done. Thicken with cornstarch and sauces. Serve over hot rice or noodles.

Viewpoint

Most moose hunting areas opened in September and were set to close on January 9. The later date allowed four more weeks hunting than other years. A number of people felt this was not a good change and wanted to get the closing date returned to December. Kevin Aylward, Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister, announced in mid-October that the season will now close on December 12.

What do you think should be done about the length of the moose hunting season?
