Continued from previous page.... Humber Literacy Council Funds were provided to assist in the
continuation of the "Books for Babies Program". The objectives of this program
are: to provide a free early intervention program for parents\caregivers; to
focus on increasing the benefits of reading; and to provide information on
literacy services to adults. St. James Integrated School The goal of this project is to increase the
availability of resources to preschool, primary and elementary special needs
children. The Wiggle Works literature and software provides individualized
instruction based on the needs of the student and helps develop skills in
reading, writing, listening and speaking. Kilbride to Ferryland Family Resource
Centre Funds were awarded to establish "The
Associate Parent Child Mother Goose Program". The goal of this program is to
create new and positive family patterns during children's crucial early years
as well as to boost pre-literacy and school readiness skills. St. Joseph's Early Literacy Network
Funds were provided to establish an early
intervention program aimed at helping parents of preschool children become
aware of their role in nourishing strong foundations for literacy development.
It also extends the PRINTS (Parents Roles Interacting With Teacher Support)
program so that parents trained previously can be mentors for those new to the
program. Newfoundland and Labrador Library
Association Funds were provided to help celebrate Library
Week 2001. This project involves creating a different theme every year and
developing activity packages for distribution to each library in the Province.
This project is aimed at school children with the hope that they will become
lifelong library users. Laubach Literacy of Canada Funds were provided to support an initiative
titled "Community Literacy Solutions". Funds will support and strengthen the
leadership of volunteer Laubach Literacy Councils established throughout the
Province. A field services officer will be available to assist with the
provision of resources, training opportunities, and specific program needs.
MacMorran Community Centre Funds were awarded to implement the project
"Strategies for Learning Success". The goal of this project is to provide
tutors with the support that will continue to enable them to become effective
literacy providers. The challenge is to provide an avenue by which parents and
