Grants Awarded by The Literacy Development Council |
Gould's Elementary School Council Monies were provided to assist with the publication of a bi-monthly school
newspaper. Students from Kindergarten to Grade Six, their parents, and teachers
at Goulds Elementary are involved in the project. Family participation will be
encouraged. St. Mary's All Grade School This project involved the purchase of software "The Wiggle Works
Program" designed to assist beginning readers. This material will be used
by the school and the local literacy council to support literacy development.
Virginia Park Community Centre Funds were provided to assist with the operation of a Learning Resource Room
at the Virginia Park Community Centre. This facility will provide children with
a place to avail of books, visual aids, computers and other educational support
materials. Parents will be encouraged to be an integral part of their
childrens' learning through a training program. Exploits Valley Community Coalition This project involves the establishment of an early intervention program in
the town of Peterview. The program to be followed is PRINTS (Parents Roles
Interacting With Teachers' Support). Twelve participants will take part in the
project over a ten week period. Northern Peninsula/Labrador South School Board Monies were provided to assist with the establishment of a Parents As
Teaching Partners program for parents of a number of schools on the Northern
Peninsula. This program is designed to improve communication between parents
and the school and create a positive attitude toward school and learning. Bishop White All-Grade School Funds were provided to assist with the development of a regional bookbag
program for children ages 3-4 in the Port Rexton-Trinity area. The goal of this
program is to provide parents with a good source of literature and activities
to share with their children. Teachers On Wheels Inc. This project involves the research, development, and publication of a book
of "The Poetry of Newfoundland and Labrador". It will be a collection
of selected poems and accompanying examinations of each poem and its author.
The project is being jointly supported by the Literacy Development Council and
the National Literacy Secretariat. James Cook Memorial School Funds were provided to assist with the establishment of a Smart Start
program for pre school children and their parents in the Cook's Harbour area.
Families will receive educational materials that will foster sound literacy
development among pre-school children. St. John's Boys and Girls Club Monies were provided to assist with a project entitled "Spotlight On
Education". This organization will work with families, schools, and
volunteer mentors to assist young people between the ages of 6-18 with the
support they may need to have success in school. Cowan Heights Elementary School This project is designed to assist parents of pre-school children by
introducing them to activities which will enhance their children's success by
giving them a head start in Kindergarten. Children and parents will be exposed
to good children's literature, a home shared reading program, and other
structured activities supporting sound literacy development. Fogo Island Fun and Learning Centre This project is an early intervention literacy program, namely PRINTS
(Parents Roles Interacting With Teachers' Support). It is the intention of the
organizers to offer this program to all Fogo Island parents who have preschool
children. |
