New From Labrador

Welcome to Labrador! Join us as we visit a few of our communities. Some are connected by road...most by snowmobile trail. During our trip we'll visit regions that are involved in a whole range of community-based literacy activities. We have listed some of the most current events as well as contact people.

Our first stop is the Labrador Straits. Partners in Learning (PIL) is a literacy outreach organization serving seven communities from L'anse-au-Clair to Red Bay. PIL works with volunteers and community organizations to help facilitate literacy programs and services in our area. In the past few months we have been involved in...

  • publishing a book on community history and culture to be used in local learning programs here and across the province.

  • tutor training - new tutors will be matched soon!

  • a parent and child family literacy program at Our Lady of Labrador School in West St. Modeste.

  • Books on Wheels - a partnership with our only public library (Lanse au Loup) to bring books to the other communities in our area

  • planning for the opening of a new multipurpose community learning centre that will service the Labrador Straits.

Moving along the coast in a northeasterly direction, our next stop is the Battle Harbour Region. This region includes the communities of Mary's Harbour, Lodge Bay, and St. Lewis. The Battle Harbour Literacy Council (BHLC) is currently "Linking Generations Through Learning" in an oral history project. This project is funded by the National Literacy Secretariat and the Battle Harbour Trust. "Linking Generations..." will provide training in oral history techniques including reminiscence work with seniors. The BHLC plans to publish the stories and local traditions gathered during the project.

St. Lewis has opened a community-based learning centre in partnership with the St. Lewis Academy. The learning centre has a successful Community Access Project (CAP) and training in basic computer literacy. Ongoing homework havens and reading circles for children also run through the learning centre. If you tune in to the local cable TV station in St. Lewis, you are likely to find children reading the community news. Funding to support the learning centre comes from CAP (Industry Canada), the Newfoundland and Labrador Literacy Development Council, and the Labrador Metis Association.

Contact: Cynthia Pye or Eva Luther at telephone 921-6986 or fax 921-6924.

Travelling further north along the coast by plane or snowmobile (or by boat in the summer), we come to the Labrador White Bear Region. Here, the Literacy Outreach Office works with five communities including Port Hope Simpson, Pinsent's Arm, Charlottetown, William's Harbour, and Norman Bay. The Labrador White Bear Literacy Outreach Office and two local learning centres report...
