The FFAW operated sixteen Education Centres (Private Training Institutions) throughout Newfoundland and Labrador from 1991-96. These centres closed on June 30, 1996 due to cuts to the TAGS Program. Shortly thereafter, The Literacy Development Council acquired the assets of these centres for utilization in a Community Education Centre Project. The primary objective of the Community Education Centre Project is to establish regional "open-learning" centres in the province. To achieve that objective, the Council has established a partnership amongst interest groups and community organizations in each region. Each partnership is provided with resources from the former FFAW Centres, as well as assistance in securing funding to operate an Education Centre. Each partnership has 100 per cent ownership of its Education Centre and programs. HRDC and NLS have been very supportive of the CEC Project. They have provided assistance for regional partnerships to establish Education Centres in St. Anthony, St. Lunaire, Bird Cove, Port Saunders, Triton, La Scie, Twillingate, Fogo, Random Island, Milltown, Marystown, Burgeo, Templeman, Roddickton, Deer lake, Lewisporte and Gander. All but the latter five have employed staff and will offer programs to adult learners within four weeks. Labrador College, in partnership with the Council, is operating an Education Centre at Lanse au Loup, Labrador. Literacy Development Council |
