Deer Lake Literacy Council
Monies were awarded to cover the costs of establishing an early intervention program in the town of Deer Lake. The Council plans to establish homework clubs in area schools and a volunteer tutoring program for pre-school children. Parents will also have the opportunity to avail of early intervention work shops. Amount awarded: $8,000. Straits and Green Island Elementary Schools
Parents of pre-school children will be given the opportunity to engage in a program which will assist in providing enriched reading experiences for their children. Objectives include increased parental awareness of language development, provision of a good source of books suitable for children and ideas on how to make reading quality time. Monies were provide to assist with the collection of books to support children and parents of children at Holy Cross School. This project is part of an overall strategy to encourage parent involvement in childrens' education. Amount awarded: $2,500. Matthew Early Intervention Team Matthew
Elementary
This project involves the development and evaluation of a community-based early intervention program with parents of pre-school children. Objectives of the program include facilitating a partnership with parents and the school, provision of relevant reading materials and the presentation of ideas and activities for parents to use with their children to further their educational development. Amount awarded: $2,500. Northshore Elementary School
The committee approved funding to assist with the development of self-esteem among young readers. In-service will be provided to both parents and teachers. This in-service has a two fold purpose to aid parents in helping develop pre readiness skills and deal with the intricacies of self-esteem in the very young. Amount awarded: $ 1,000. St. Theresa's Elementary School
Funds were approved to assist with the provision of reading materials for pre-kindergarten students through the incorporation of the SORT Program in the school's "Introduction To Kindergarten" Program. This program will support the needs of students and provide parents with training in me development of early literacy skills. Amount awarded: $1,500. Port Hope Simpson Learning Centre
This project will provide opportunities for adult learners to obtain hands on reading and writing skills combined with computer experience. The Learning Centre, with the help of volunteers, will compile, write and publish a variety of stories to be shared with the literacy community. Amount awarded: $8,480. Community Education Centre
Monies were provided to assist with the in servicing of parents and the supply of book bags and reading material for pre-school children in the region. Books will be exchanged on a regular basis. Amount awarded: $3,000. John Howard Society of Newfoundland
Funds were provided to identify potential sources of private funding for various literacy agents. A report will be submitted to Council identifying these funding sources. Council plans to make these findings available to stakeholders. Amount awarded: $2,000. Rabbittown Learners Association
In commemoration of Rabbittown's 10th Anniversary, funds were awarded to assist with the publication of a learners book written by present and past participants in the Rabbittown program. Amount awarded: $3,500. Community Education Centre
Funds were awarded to assist with the establishment of a "Summer Reading for Fun" project in partnership with the local elementary school in this region. Kindergarten to grade six students will have the opportunity to avail of this service. Amount awarded: $3,730. Northern Peninsula/Labrador South School
District
This project involves the introduction of a "Parents As Teaching Partners" Program for area residents. This program will attempt to improve communication between parents and the school, provide information about local literacy services, provide concrete ideas for home-school partnerships, as well as support general literacy initiatives. Amount awarded: $5,000. Exploits Valley Community Coalition
Funds were provided to assist with the establishment of a Satellite Literacy Library Project. Based on feedback of the satellite communities and staff input, the coalition plans to develop a literacy library of thematic preschool programs. Amount awarded: $5,300. Partners in Learning
This project is designed to assist local people develop skills which will allow them the opportunity to research and record family and community histories. It will be offered in partnership with a number of groups within the communities in the Labrador Straits. Amount awarded: $10,000. |
