Graphic: the front cover of the book T he Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador will soon release an Adult Basic Education (ABE) Reference Guide. The Guide will be targeted to learners participating in basic literacy and Level One ABE programs throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The handbook addresses issues identified by learners and practitioners. Particular attention is paid to issues that often concern adult learners when they first begin a program and to barriers that can inhibit progress. The guide includes information on topics including; getting started, establishing goals, study skills, assessment, learning styles, measuring personal growth, balancing home and school, and learner rights and responsibilities.

It is hoped that the resource will provide adult learners with useful information that can make their return to the classroom or to a learning program a more positive experience. The Literacy Development Council funded the project and will publish eight hundred copies of the resource for distribution to programs and learners throughout the province. Rabbittown Learner's Program – Face the Facts

The Rabbittown Learners Program recently sponsored a project where six adults shared their stories of living with low literacy skills with the public. Two of the participants, Alicia and Derrick were former learners of the program, while Aaron, Dianne, Stewart and Herman are currently attending Rabbittown. These learners gave a total of 22 presentations to schools and Community Centres over a three-month period. The focus of the "Face the Facts" project was to provide an awareness of, and to promote a greater understanding of the issues of literacy in our society. The targeted audience for the project was youth aged 12-17 and the general public. The issues of the ongoing problems 'associated with dropping out of school and the need for a high school education were emphasized. As part of the project, a strong working relationship was established with the Avalon East School Board and the Executive Directors of the Community Centres. The Rabbittown Learners Program would like to sincerely thank all those who made this project a huge success, especially the National Literacy Secretariat, H.R.D.C., who provided the funding for this worthwhile project.
