Announcing the publication of two new supplementary sessions for the Literacy and Parenting Skills - ESL (LAPS-ESL) Facilitator's Guide

"Let's Talk About Food"
and
"Is My Home Safe for My Children"

Let's Talk About Food

This session allows parents to examine what their children are eating and what foods are healthy on a low income budget. Tips for encouraging children to eat and for "smart shopping" can be very helpful to parents. The Canada Food Guide is included in this session.

Is My Home Safe for My Children?

Raising awareness about the possible natural hazards and dangerous goods in our homes can be most helpful to participants new to an area. Activities include identification of the hazards for different age groups and discussion about strategies required to avoid dangerous situations.

To order the supplementary LAPS-ESL session package (two new sessions and participants' handouts to be added to your LAPS-ESL manual) at $2.50 each, or to order the new LAPS-ESL manual (which includes the new supplementary sessions) at $20 each, please forward your request and a cheque payable to Bow Valley College LAPS to:

Directory of Canadian Literacy Research Wanted: Research Documents

The University of Alberta's Centre for Research on Literacy has received funding from the National Literacy Secretariat to develop a comprehensive directory of adult literacy research. When the directory is completed, you will be able to a access it through the National Adult Literacy Database (NALD). The directory will contain annotations of Canadian research that has been completed in the past five years as well as research in progress. In some instances, the directory will contain full length research documents.

In using the term "research", we are referring to the systematic, purposeful process of creating knowledge. The directory will include research that involves the following components: problem or purpose, background or context, methods for data collection and analysis, and discussion of results and implications. The directory will not include opinion pieces, testimonials or program descriptions.

This directory will benefit academics and practitioners by providing a venue for people to access information on completed research and research in progress. In particular, the directory will assist in disseminating information on research that is not published in mainstream resources. An increased awareness of current research may facilitate collaboration among researchers.

If you are currently working on a research project, please e-mail Pat at Patty.Campbell@ualberta.ca or phone (780) 492-2984. If you completed a research project in the past five years (1994-present), please send a copy of the document to:
