Ready, Set, Go - St. Joseph's school will implement a head start program for pre-school children. This program will be made available throughout the academic year to students registering for next year's Kindergarten program. Registrants will attend pre-school sessions one half day per week with support from a qualified teacher and university graduates thus enhancing the Kindergarten experience.

To Develop Methods for Literacy Intervention and Correction Through a Peer Tutor/Learner Initiative - This project will involve the development of a peer tutoring program for high school students. Volunteer tutors will assist learners with organizational support from a coordinator. The coordinator will promote the program throughout the region.

All Saints Primary School..........$7,500
Literacy Through Computers, An After School Program for Primary Students - This program will be available to Grades One, Two and Three students to develop practices which will raise student achievement levels in a balanced curriculum through the use of computers.

Ability Employment Corporation..........$3,550
Plain Language Story Development - This project will involve the development of two booklets written at a Level One reading level. These booklets will be written and researched by two clients identified by the Ability Employment Corporation. Clients will receive support from cooperative education students and volunteers from Canada Word Youth. They will write biographies as they relate to living with a disability.

Rabbittown Learners Program..........$15,000
Program Development - Monies designated for this project will support the development of a Life Skills program. Eighteen modules will be developed covering topics such as Nutrition, Problem Solving and Parenting. They will be written for those who require alternatives to more traditional programming approaches.

Bonavista South Regional Development Association..........$5,000
Learning Packages for Different Reading Levels - This project involves the development of four learning packages written at four different reading levels. It will meet the needs of the people in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. The content ofthe packages will highlight the Discovery Trail region as it relates to the 1997, 500-Year Celebration of the Newfoundland. This project received significant financial support from the National Literacy Secretariat as well as other sponsors.

Exploits Valley Community Coalition..........$3,047
Family Literacy program - Monies provided for this project will support the development of a family literacy program for the Botwood-Peterview area. It will involve researching present programs and adapting these programs to meet the needs of area residents. The project will also include the accumulation of resource materials to support the program.

The Breakfast Bunch - This project involves the promotion of literacy to children and families visiting The Village. Its aim is to teach children about reading and its relation to various community issues. It also involves performances by Performers for Literacy and the formation of a club entitled The Breakfast Bunch. This project is being co-sponsored by numerous local corporate sponsors.

Battle Harbour RegionalDevelopment Association..........$9,500
St. Lewis Learning and Resource Centre - The main objective of this project is to establish a Learning and Resource Centre in St. Lewis, Labrador. The Centre will be accessible to the public, work in consultation with community literacy groups and provide assistance to learners, volunteer tutors and literacy groups.

Gander CornmunityEducation Committee.......... $6,350
Reopening the Gander Literacy Centre- Monies provided for this project will support the reopening of the Gander Literacy Centre. This centre will be operated by a newly established education committee with support from Central College. This initiative is intended to see the Centre's operation through a transition period from a college-owned to a community- based learning centre. The initiative will also see the development of a strategic plan for the long-term operation of the centre.

Curtoglen LiteracyLearning Centre Committee..........$600
Curtoglen Literacy Learning Centre - Monies were provided in this project for the purchase of "little books". The purpose of this program is to support parents in their efforts to encourage preschool children to read books.

Windsor Pentecostal Elementary School..........$2,435
WE CARE Program - This project will provide an equal opportunity for parents and children to foster healthy reading habits. Parents will have access to information and resources under topics such as language development, reading activities, and, an introduction to quality children's literature in general information sessions. A practical component will follow these sessions encouraging group participation and hands-on activities.

Southern LabradorDevelopment Association..........$19,500
Oral History and Literacy - Monies for this project were provided to assist with the collection of resources to start local research, develop collections policy, and establish an archive of audio, video, and print materials. This resource base will be used to support the connection between oral history and literacy.

The Cape Committee..........$3,300
Family Literacy Program - The aim of this project is to develop an awareness and understanding of the importance of early childhood exposure to reading and the effect it has on future reading and writing skills. Literacy information kits for parents of newborn babies, a family literacy newsletter, brochures and posters, and presentations to parents will be incorporated into program delivery.

Charlottetown Learning Centre..........$13,248
Learning Program Facilitator - Monies for this project support the hiring of a program facilitator. This person will work with the literacy office to deliver relevant programs to the community, network with the Labrador Literacy Information Action Network, assist in the training of tutors and support community-based volunteer initiatives.

Bonaventure-English HarbourDevelopment Association..........$15,943
Literacy, Youth, Theatre - This proposal addresses the concerns of high risk youth on the Bonavista Peninsula. Four at-risk students will be given the opportunity to improve their own skills while developing a unique life-long learning awareness campaign through theatrical performance. The production will be presented at 30 shows in the identified region. This project received a significant amount of funding from the National Literacy Secretariat.

The total costs associated with projects submitted during this call for submissions was $1,233,747 with requests for $ 621,169 from the Literacy Development Council. The Council awarded $125,591 of the amount requested. Our next review date will be in early February. The deadline for new submissions is January 31,1997.
