Rabbittown Learners Program Book Launch

The Rabbittown Learners Program launched their book "Faces of Literacy" on International Literacy Day, September 8, 1998. This book was written to commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of the Rabbittown Learners Program. These stories have been written by past and present learners and tell of their struggles with trying to cope with little or no education. A special thank you to the Literacy Development Council who provided the financial support for this project. This was presented to the Rabbittown Learners Program during our Tenth Anniversary celebrations in May, 1998.

To help celebrate the book launch, several guests spoke to the group. Thank you to Dr. William Fagan, Chair of the Literacy Development Council, Mr. Ralph Crocker from the Honourable Lloyd Matthews' office, Francis Ennis, co founder of the Rabbittown Learners Program who presented several books to the program, and Mr. Walter Andrews chairperson of the Rabbittown Learners Board of Directors.

Gladys Farrell, a former student read her story to the group. Gladys is presently doing Level III at the Atlantic Construction Training Centre. Pearcey Lane, who is still a student in our program, also read his story. We are very proud of the accomplishments of each and every student. Our celebrations continued with a video tape looking back a our ten years of success. The program closed with an open house which gave learners, staff, and guests an opportunity to meet with various people from the surrounding area.

Special draws of school supplies were made during the open house.

Discovery Trail Learning Packages title

The Bonavista South Regional Development Association, Plate Cove East, and the Historical Societies proudly launched the Discovery Trail Learning Package on September 9, 1998.

The Learning Package, developed for new learners, contains cultural and historic material based on research by author Linda Hayley-Bath.

The project originally began with the 'O Buona Vista Committee. Their goal was to develop a way to preserve the heritage of the region through education. This led to the partnership of the Historic Societies, the Development Association, and the Literacy Outreach Office in Musgravetown for the production of the Learning Packages. The package consists of three books.

Work Along the Discovery Trail - Level I. This booklet, about the work of the early settlers, is designed for the beginning reader. Sentence structure is basic and the booklet is well illustrated with numerous photos and line drawings. Do you know what a cobbler was or did?

Dwelling Houses of the Discovery Trail - Level II. This booklet, describing average dwelling houses, has been written to suit the needs of intermediate readers. The sentence structure is more complex and, while line drawings and an illustrated glossary facilitate learning, this booklet contains more text than pictures. Have you seen in your area a Raincap? A Linhay? A Dormer?

Poetry and Songs of the Discovery Trail - Level III. This anthology is designed for the student who is nearing the end of the high school equivalency program. However, while certain selections may require a high level of reading comprehension, many of the poems can provide practice and pleasure to students who have not reached a senior high level. "Words and Chickens" by Lillian May Martin, "Autumn is a Flirt " by Bertille Tovin, 'When I Mowed Pat Murphy's Meadow ", by J. M. Devine are some of the songs in this volume.

Maps of the NEW founde LAND is a poster depicting the various progressions of mapping the island of Newfoundland. The explanatory text is simple and straight forward.

The Bonavista South Development Association is now distributing copies of the Learning Package to Adult Learning Centres as mandated by the funding. If your Centre hasn't received a copy by mid December, please contact us at 545-2130 or Fax 545-2142.
