children between the ages of four and seven years in Port Saunders.

Trinity Placentia Development Association
Monies were awarded to assist with the development of curriculum
materials through a project entitled Growing Up in Rural
Newfoundland.. The objectives of the project include; provision of ABE
Level 1 materials relevant to rural Newfoundlanders, the involvement
of learners in the planning and development of reading material, and

Laubach Literacy of Canada
Laubach Literacy of Canada was awarded a grant to support their
field services operations in the province. This involves providing for
the salary of the flea services worker, travel, office space and
materials. The field worker directly supports all the provincial
Laubach chapters as well as a variety of Laubach initiated projects.

Froude Avenue Community Learning Centre
This project involves the establishment of a youth educational
support program responding to children and teens in the Froude
Avenue/Mundy Pond area. The main objectives of the program include;
provision of educational services promoting the development and
enhancement of literacy skills, abilities and aptitudes, and the
utilization of prevention and early intervention methodologies for
students At risk. of dropping out of school.

start-up funding for an active kids program in LaScie. This initiative
was spearheaded by the local management committee of the Community

Conception Bay North Laubach Literacy Council
This project involves the development of training material to
make parents aware of their importance in literacy development. The
project will involve the training of parents and the implementation of
partnerships among those who share the responsibility of childrens'
literacy development. The project is supported financially by the
Literacy Development Council and the National Literacy Secretariat.

Cottrell's Cove Academy
Monies were provided to assist with the purchase of computer
software and reading materials to support an after school/evening
computer dub. This project is run by parent volunteers and teachers at
Cottrell's Cove Academy. Objectives include; improving the students
quality of life through reading experiences, improvement in reading
ability, improvement in student interest in reading.

Bishop's Falls Correctional Centre
This project involves the expansion of literacy services at the
Correctional Centre as well an outreach follow-up for inmates using
the educational services available. The Centre has a variety of
partnerships involved in the delivery of services. As a result,
instructional hours will be increased, a supply of multimedia
materials will be made available, and inmate educational support will
be coordinated through a transitional period upon release.

Upper Gullies Elementary School
This project involves the establishment of an early intervention
literacy based program designed to assistant risk. children in their
acquisition of literacy-related concepts through the primary grades.
The program will assist 20 students at Upper Gullies Elementary.

Literacy Outreach Office
This project is designed to supplement the work attempted by the
literacy ounces within Economic Zone 7. Laubach Literacy Councils will
work with Outreach Offices throughout the Zone to baker prepare them
for further literacy development and on-going literacy initiatives.
Two meetings will be held The first meeting will involve an
information sharing session, promotion and awareness workshop,
overview of the zone's strategic plan, and a workshop on Volunteer and
Learner recruitment. The second meeting will deal with organizing the
Laubach AGM, regional updates, a proposal writing workshop, and the
start of a support network.

All Saints Primary School
Two projects were combined to assist students at All Saints
Primary in their pursuit of literacy improvement. A summer literacy
program was established to address increasing student achievement in
language arts in all grade areas; and, increasing the gains in
literacy, special needs students have made throughout the school year.

Humber Literacy Council
This project involves an expansion of the "Books For Babies"
being run by the Humber Literacy Council. The coordinator will visit
areas in the province to conduct public sessions on the program and
its benefits. Sessions will outline how a small group of volunteers
can make this program work. Areas identified include St. John's, Grand
Falls- Windsor, Grand Bank-Burin Peninsula, Bay d'Espoir, Fogo, Happy
Valley-Goose Bay, and Labrador City-Churchill Falls.
