Newfoundland Winners Recognized title

Two Newfoundlander's were among this year's 36 recipients of the 1999 Canada Post Literacy Awards. Elgin "Bud" Murrin of Cox's Cove and Edna Hall of Trios Cailloux both won Individual Literacy Achievement awards. The Discovery Centres of Newfoundland were also recognized with the Literacy Leadership Award. Steven Snow, president of the Discovery Centres and Mark Vivian, vice-president, received their awards at a special ceremony held at the Pippy Park Fluvarium in St. John's on September 22, 1999. The presentation ceremony and reception following were organized with the assistance of the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Other dignitaries and co-sponsors on hand for the occasion include Luanne Leamon, Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for literacy, Ian Burgess, Senior Executive representative for Canada Post, Dr. William Fagan, Chair of the Literacy Development Council of Newfoundland and Labrador, Derek Hiscock, President of Robinson-Blackmore Printing and Publishing and Past President of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association (CCNA), Bonita Kearns, Marketing Director of ACE INA Insurance. Other sponsors of the event, included the National Bank, DOMTAR, National Car Rental, IBM Canada, Lexmark, the Lowe-Martin Group, the National Literacy Secretariat, National Post and le journal LES AFFAIRES.

This marked the seventh year that Canada Post has recognized learners, individuals and organizations devoted to the literacy cause.

Community Writing Course

The Adult Basic Education Writing Network will be offering a Community Writing course next spring. The program begins in April, 2000 and will meet by teleconference on Wednesday evenings. It is designed for adult literacy workers, ABE instructors, students and graduates of ABE programs, and others with interest in community writing. You'll work with resource people from the Neighbourhood Writing Alliance in Chicago, Amherst Writer's and Artists Institute in Massachusetts, the Outlaw Writers of Bonavista, a Senior Class in Minnesota, and Write to Learn in Camrose, Alberta.
