Community Leadership Awards – Background:
The Canada Post Literacy Awards were first
established in 1993 to discover and acknowledge the
achievements of Canadians who have made a special
effort or an important contribution to literacy.
Today, the program continues to recognize
grassroots literacy initiatives, and celebrate the
achievements of both learners and those who have
helped them learn to read and write.
By acknowledging their efforts, the Literacy Awards
encourage thousands of Canadians to improve their
reading and writing skills, and inspire them to reach
their personal literacy goals.
Canada Post Literacy Awards
Receiving the Canada Post Literacy Award for Community Leadership in 2006 as we celebrated our twentieth anniversary was particularly meaningful to Project Literacy. However, we must always remember that the accolades this award bestows are entirely due to the dedication of hundreds of volunteer tutors and the 2,500 learners who worked so hard, often in the face of great adversity, to achieve their goals.
