Introduction
This book is a
guide to developing curriculum for workplace basic skills programs. We wrote it
mainly for facilitators, instructors, coordinators, and teacher trainers
responsible for designing programs, teaching, facilitating learning in
individualized programs, and creating workplace learning materials. We hope it
will also be useful (in conjunction with the handbooks* in this series) to
educators involved in other aspects of workplace development and to union
leaders and management who actively promote learning at the workplace.

In the first two
chapters we set the stage for curriculum development, concentrating on basic
skills in the workplace. We define the scope of the book and look at how
curriculum fits in with the rest of workplace development. We talk about
collaboration and the principles that guide us. Chapter 3 deals with needs
assessment, stressing flexibility of methodology to accommodate individual
workplaces. Chapter 4 is about program design and how your methods will vary
according to specific needs. Finally, in Chapter 5 we discuss the materials you
will use to carry out your programs. |
