The concluding section of the report has three parts. The first provides a brief review of the case of the Boys' and Girls' Literacy Project, its purposes, conceptual frame work, methodology and procedures. The second section reports on the findings and lessons learned from the reading assessment and the reading attitude survey, the literature circle implementation, the male mentor reading program, and the partnership structure. The final section turns to a discussion of the literacy education model which informs the case of the Boys' and Girls' Literacy Project.
"Reading and writing develops through interactions with both adults and peers: students should not sit in isolation working on individual worksheets to practice skills outside the social and cultural contexts of normal use" (Raphael & McMahon, 1994 p. 102)
The purpose of the research was to examine the literacy performance of boys and girls in their classrooms in school. The methods were introduced in a school context to attempt to make some changes in the school environment.
