Literature Circles
Several factors contributed to the success of the literature circles strategy. A significant factor of success
was related to the researchers' literacy expertise. This expertise contributed to the prediction that literature
circles would engage boys in reading. The literature circles strategy is based on the transaction model of
literacy which emphasizes social interaction and active learning. The social contexts of literacy are at the heart
of the enterprise.
A second factor of success was that literature circles are included in the English
Language Arts Curriculum Documents in the Province of New Brunswick. Therefore,
the researchers were not expecting teachers to go outside of the prescribed curriculum.
Subsequently, the teachers realized the significance of the strategy and were willing
to further their own professional growth and development.
The support that the researchers were able to provide the teachers and students contributed to the success of this strategy. Furthermore, the length of the project allowed the researchers to observe, monitor, and document the literature circles process. The researchers were able to observe growth in the students' reading comprehension and their ability to talk about books.
Male Mentor Reading Program
The researchers recruited mentors from the campus community through notices and informal
conversations with students. The support from the STU Athletic Department contributed to the success of
recruiting mentors. The student body was well informed which led to the success. Attendance at the initial
information meetings grew each year.
