The model represents the readers we encountered. The following story is one example.

A grade four student had not been successful in literacy. Previously, he had received intensive small group reading instruction outside of the classroom. When the project started, he began to actively engage in the classroom with the mentors. In fact, he took on a leadership role during the mentoring sessions. He was transacting with mentors and peers; raising questions about the stories; and sharing his own responses. He was beginning to take risks by taking part in school literacy.

In grade five, this same child participated eagerly in the literature circles. Although his reading skills have improved, he is still below grade level. He now sees himself as a reader. His attitude change along with his interest in literacy has put him on the road to reading success.
