The mentoring in the Boys' & Girls'
Literacy Project is a volunteer, research,
mentor program; informal, yet in school.
The mentors' in school practice includes
read-aloud and doing literacy response
activities with the children. The mentors
work in whole class situations, rather than
with small groups. The evaluation of the
mentor program is found in the mentors'
own journal responses, year end focus
group interviews, teacher focus group
interviews, and responses collected from the
children. The program development is
described in the next section.
Research Methodology
The case of the male mentor reading program uses qualitative methods to asses the effectiveness of the
mentor program. This is based on seeking the type of knowledge that has an expansionist approach to data
collection. The issues arising and questions raised in exploring the effectiveness of a male mentor reading
program are myriad. Table 7 outlines the research goals, methods, and rationale.
