The Mentor Handbooks also included a variety of reading responses accompanied with directions and tips for use with students. Reading responses included Book Rating; Two-Word Strategy; Book Review: Narrative; If I Were the Author; Book Review: Nonfiction; Memorable Moments; I Wonder Questions; Sketch to Stretch; and On My Own Responses (Hoyt, 1999; Hoyt, 2000).

Male Mentor Reading Logs were prepared and distributed. The Reading Logs provided the mentors with an opportunity to record their Read Aloud book information as well as their personal reflections and reactions of the students during each session (Figure 3).
