8. Overview of Program Please give a brief description of the initiative, in one or two sentences. AVID is a five-year project involving 1,200 students in 21 schools. AVID is an in-school academic support program for students in grades 9-12 that prepares them for post-secondary studies by placing academically average students in advanced postsecondary preparatory classes while providing them with the skills and supports to achieve success with a curriculum based on writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading (WIC-R). It seeks to level the playing field for minority, rural and low-income students, including those students whose families have no pattern of postsecondary attendance.
