Name of Group Title of Project Description
Canadian Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Council (COEJATC) Canadian Operating Engineers Workplace Essential Skills Project The objective of this project is to develop national learning/curriculum outcomes that will be used to develop national diagnostic tools and training programs to identify and improve workplace Essential Skills to better facilitate the mobility of Operating Engineers and address regional skill shortages. One of the purposes of this project was to identify the Workplace/Essential Skills needed by Heavy Equipment Operators and Crane Operators. They compiled a chart listing the workplace skills, associated Essential Skills and learning outcomes (related tasks and knowledge) as well as a checklist of applicability to Heavy Equipment and/or Crane Operators. The Essential Skills Profile and the available occupation analysis were analyzed and summarized to ensure that the Essential Skills Learning Outcome chart would be as complete as possible before the validation process.
Canadian Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Council (COEJATC) NeedsAssessment for National Literacy Initiative The Canadian Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Council is a national body which facilitates and enhances training for Operating Engineers across Canada. Due to an inadequate supply of skilled trade workers, the Canadian construction industry is on the verge of a crisis as identified in the 1997 Labour Market Analysis. Due to changes in technology and work procedures members who wish to upgrade their skills are limited due to difficulties with literacy and numeracy. The NLS has partnered with Operating Engineers locals across the country in some innovative projects, but there has never been the opportunity to deal with their literacy needs on a national basis until now. The Union is now proposing to organize and host a national meeting involving all stakeholders who will help identify and address the literacy and basic skills issues for current and future Operating Engineers across Canada. This meeting will lead to a strategy for future action. A written report with recommendations will be submitted to the NLS.
Canadian Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Council (COEJATC) Workplace Essential Skills To review and update the Essential Skills profile for the Heavy Equipment Operators (NOC 7421)and to develop diagnostic tools to identify deficiencies and an inventory of training programs to address deficiencies. These products are intended for use by entry level and/or in-service operators. The Essential Skills Profile and the available occupation analysis were analyzed and summarized to ensure that the Essential Skills Learning Outcome chart would be as complete as possible before the validation process. The next steps in this project will be to link the validated learning outcomes with assessment tools and training that exist, and/or develop tools and training to meet the requirements of the learning outcomes.
