United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America - Local 27 Feasibility Study The Carpenter's Local 27 plans to conduct a feasibility regarding a union based program targeted toward visible minority and native newcomers to Toronto who would like to work in the carpentry trades but who lack the basic skills.
United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 2000 Aboriginal Computer Based Education and Support System UFCW Local 2000 Training Centre in partnership with Visions First Nations Planning Group, the provincial Industry Training and Apprenticeship Commission, Centra Gas and the Industry Adjustment Services will develop a Distance Education Introductory Training System for the aboriginal community. This project builds from a Regional Initiative for Skill Enhancement (RISE) III which had created an accessible and responsive distance learning option for 28 workers who had erratic skills and/or no access to traditional educational courses. UFCW Local 2000 will explore culturally appropriate basic skills upgrading programs available on-line. UFCW will also evaluate, modify and/or develop components of the Basic Skills on- line curriculum. The curriculum would have an applied focus with an emphasis on the trades and would appropriately address first nation requirements for accessibility. A second component to this project, funded by the Industry Training and Apprenticeship Commission, will be the delivery of training, including curriculum addressing computer technology, and how to learn on-line. This initiative will help create a vision of career options, which would act as incentives to aboriginal people to up-grade their basic skills on-line and in class. This will provide aboriginal participants with employment options related to their choice of trade. An evaluation with identified measures will be maintained regularly. A written report will be submitted to the NLS.
