Essential Skills into College or
Training Institution Curricula
and Programs
  • This morning I will show you how to integrate essential skills into technical curriculum
  • I am working on a curriculum for a college in northern Alberta. We are incorporating essential skills into a curriculum aimed at helping Aboriginals enter and remain in the workforce in forestry and in oil and gas resource based industries.
  • This project is a partnership with Portage College and Alberta Pacific Forest Industries or ALPAC.
  • This curriculum is presently being piloted. The first intake of students was in February.
  • Much of what I speak about today is the process we used for this curriculum.

Integrate or “Splice”

  • Splice: to unite or join by interweaving the strands
  • I will be using the word “splice” since it seems to be more of what we are doing when we integrate essential skills.
  • Also, the word “splice” suggests more of a workforce context.
