- Remember I mentioned that for the project I had 16 profiles
to reference. I did an Excel chart for each essential skill.
- There is a vertical list of occupations and then the examples
(see attached hand-out).
- This process gave me a good picture of what kinds of essential
skills and documents had to be included: Memos, bulletins, announcements,
operation and maintenance manuals, policies and procedures
- It also gave me a picture of the purpose for the reading and
the type of text involved (e.g.) few workers scan forms or labels,
but a significant number scan manuals, specifications and regulations.

- It was at this point that I went back to learn more about the
company.
- I met those involved with organizational performance:
- I asked questions about what essential skills were needed.
- I collected the workplace documents used.
- I asked for the type of documents that entry level workers
would be expected to use.
- I also validated my list of workplace essential skills with
the company.
