text from a reference handbook
  • Here a sample of workplace reading. This is part of a safety orientation reference handbook. Although it is reviewed at orientation, workers are expected to keep this manual for reference and to use it as needed.
  • Workplace reading most often means:
    • Glancing down a table of contents
    • Scanning headings
    • Scanning for key words
    • Not reading everything

Document Use in the Classroom vs. Workplace

Workplace

  • Document use is of major importance in the workplace. No job in Canada has yet been identified that does not use document
  • Document use is directly linked to the performance of a task.

Classroom

  • Document use is of secondary importance compared to reading text.

  • Since workplace documents are not usually seen in traditional learning situations, they are unfamiliar to new entrants to the workplace.
example of a standard time sheet
  • This a standard time sheet that is common for labourers to complete at the end of each work day. A document such as this is not a “typical” classroom document.
